UGC forms panel to review NET efficacy

New Delhi : The University Grants Commission (UGC) has formed a committee to check whether the National Eligibility Test (NET) is an effective mechanism to select candidates who came become reasonably good teaching professionals. The move comes after the UGC changed the NET to a test that is completely based on multiple-choice questions.Headed by Prof Yogendra Yadav, a UGC member, the committee has been asked to examine and assess the efficacy of the NET keeping in mind the student profile, the testing methodology involved and also the quality of candidates being churned out of the NET mechanism.
“At heart is the issue that while the NET was introduced years back in a bid to ensure that certain minimum eligibility standards of quality are met by those entering the teaching profession, there has been no assessment ever since of whether or not the exam has been successful in ensuring quality parameters are met or whether it is working in the interest of the teaching profession. Accordingly, this committee has been set up”, a senior official at UGC said.
NET determines eligibility for lectureship and for award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for Indian nationals in order to ensure minimum standards for the entrants in the teaching profession and research.
Incidentally, some academics had demanded scrapping NET. Still other, however, argue that the exam may just needs to be reviewed instead.
The exam has had its share of controversy. The change in norms to qualify the test after the June 2012 exam had led to court cases. The UGC brought out supplementary result lists and a committee was set up to address issues.
